History |
The Newcastle & District Model Railway Society was founded in 1970 and staged its first exhibition in the Old Town Hall, now demolished, like a lot of fine buildings in Newcastle. The next two years saw the annual November exhibition taking place at the Civic Centre, in rather cramped conditions. Then followed an unbroken spell at the Guildhall on the Quayside from 1974 until we were forced to leave due to redevelopment after the 1995 show. Since then we have tried holding the show at Design Works at Felling followed by a move back to Newcastle City Centre in the University Ballroom, off the Haymarket.
Falling attendances meant changing the exhibition yet again in 2002. This time we moved to our present venue at GATESHEAD STADIUM with its easy access and good car parking facilities. Visitor numbers improved and in November 2004 we held a joint exhibition with the O gauge modellers of NEGOM and hope to continue with this arrangement.

Clubrooms |
A couple of rooms in pubs and the loft of the then chairman Mark Hannan passed as "clubrooms" in the founding year of 1970. Our first proper rooms were in New Bridge Street in 1971 above Olley the Glazier's premises complete with many a fond memory of climbing over mountains of broken glass in the dark, to get to our door. This place was eventually demolished to make way for the Central Motorway and we moved, in the mid 70s to Stowell Street where our well known layout of Wylam was built (North Eastern Railway c. 1910 in EM).....the scenic sections are now to be seen at the Wylam Museum. When the Stowell St. area was re-developed as Newcastle's "China Town" the clubrooms were ear-marked for a car park site and we were moving again.
Clyde House (18 Westmorland Road) has been our home since the early 1980s, notable layouts built here include Wetheral (NER c. 1910 again in EM).....sold to Carlisle Museum, Alston in Gauge O and Calder Bridge (NER c.1910 in P4 and winner of the Ken York Trophy at Scaleforum in 1995).
